Habitat For Humanity Restores - You'll Even Find The Kitchen Sink

Habitat For Humanity Restores - You'll Even Find The Kitchen Sink

If you are a Diyer because of the sheer enjoyment of Diying then that's great. You want to learn to do something new such as install new flooring in your living room or replace that ugly apricot green toilet that came with your fixer up house.

Or if you are like most of us Diyers then you are reading up on Diy projects to save money.

But... With some self study you can get the job done and save some money in the process. When it comes to materials you could end up spending even more then your undertaker of a package deal or repair guy. The best way to save would be not only be to do it yourself but to use materials that are whether discounted or used. Used? Yes, used. There are lots of building materials that could go from one building being torn down to a new building being built up. By using these materials you are saving them a trip to the dump and an eternity in a landfill doing no good for anyone, not even the earth. You are even saving the demolishing enterprise money as they pay a fee based on the weight of the loads of trash they leave at the dump.

When my husband Thad and I planned a new building for our pets and members of our Boston Terrier breeding program we first idea of the plan and then the cost. After rigorous consideration and viewing transported buildings from mega home correction shop we decided that what we needed was at that time was out of our price range. Any way we still could not afford to go without a safe and comfortable building for our dogs.

After an introductory internet crusade for using and re-using used building materials I found endless sites, articles, guidance and photos of such projects. I poured over these pages into the wee hours of the morning. My husband urged me to go to bed but I knew I was being hooked into a unique branch of Diying, the recycled spectrum of it. And oh how I was hooked.

My eyes were now open to locating materials for our new building where every I would go. New reasoning and literal notes were actively filed away. This new project was also fun as I challenged us to build this new building for under ,000.00. Could we do this? Was it even possible?

One morning on our way to an out of town engagement I spotted a door and frame atop a mound of boards and other discarded wood alongside a local highway. I told Thad we could use that for our doggy house, he just smiled and said yes, but we can't get it now. I felt the opening had passed because nothing else but person would come and see the value I'd seen in it and it would be gone by the time I could claim it.

The next morning Thad and I headed out in his old truck to the location of the door and frame alongside that particular highway only to find as we approached that the door and frame was gone. I was disappointed but a closer look revealed that what was left was nothing else but a Diy recyclers dream. Not only did we find someone else two doors with intake matching frames but we also found T-111 boards, 2x4's. 4x6's, cinder blocks, and more. We looked at each other in delightful surprise at our find and we each begin to guesstimate the savings we just found alongside a busy highway.

We figured that the householder had planned to build a nice sized shed but for whatever conjecture the unused boards and materials were now stacked exterior with the unspoken expectation that someone, whatever who wanted them could tote them away. We were those someones.

After pricing the same materials locally Thad and I came up with a sum of over ,000.00. We were amazed and ready to find some more materials for our building.

One day reading a local newspaper I found an report on The Habitat Humanity Restore opening. There was now two locations I could visit and the nicely written report gave me the telephone numbers and locations of these two great stores. Within a half an hour after reading the report I was calling the whole of the closest location. The store was open and I asked if they had any windows for my building. In pricing new windows I have to say I was not aware that windows were so expensive. But not used ones at the Restore. The store had just gotten some in from a de-constructed building and they were now for sale.

I snatched the windows up along with gorgeous kitchen cabinets and a small love seat for a very low price. I called Thad at work and happily reported my success. The cabinets and loveseat and windows went into storage to keep them in top condition until we could install them in our doggy house.

A combine of days later I found a house in our neighborhood being torn down. I left a note at the unoccupied site and received a call less then five minutes later. The caller told me that I could help myself to any and all of the wood at the house. And so we did.

After our few range opportunities we realized we had collected all but the roofing materials for our building. We even returned to the Habitat of Humanity Restore to find our sub-flooring and insulation among other things.

After some hard work, lots of laughs and pats on the back our dog's house is 95% completed. When the winter temperatures came with their biting winds and rains our dogs were comfortably warm, safe and snug in their new recycled home.

I was even able to find a vinyl flooring remnant in an exciting style and color for next to nothing at one of our large home correction stores. Right now we are getting fencing materials which you guessed it is in used and good condition sparing the landfills of someone else burden and helping us as well. This experience with not only Diying but with de-constructing, recycling and constructing has taught me that there are savings to be had roughly everywhere you look. You simply have to look for them and seize the opening to acquire these free or discounted materials and reap the astounding savings from doing so.

Next, painting the interior walls with oops paint? I don't know, but with all of the money I saved nothing else but I can now afford to buy not only the brand but color and shade I nothing else but want in now the fun part of decorating our doggy house.

The final price of our doggy house has come out at roughly 0.00 which is excellent. Not counting our labor which we used time we would be doing some leisure activity. When I look at the building I am filled with a great sense of accomplishment on a job well done not only with the corporal labor but also the planning and shopping and free conference of materials. I am distinct that if you seek to build something you too can find free or low cost recycled materials and help save the earth some further waste and yourself some money too.
